Does Joan or anyone have information as to how Colchester's allocation of expenses compares with budgets in other area towns? Thanks.

"Finance – Joan Boehm (Asst. Town Manager/CFO)

Did you know that the Town divided the General Fund operating budget into segments by departments? In FY 13, the 5 departments that consumed the largest portion of the budget were as follows:
Police 34% $3,745,204
Public Works 20% $2,240,948
Fire Department Contributions 7% $793,252
Parks & Recreation 6% $625,229
Planning & Zoning 5% $553,552
72% $7,988,185

Total FY 13 Budget 100.0%$ 11,085,390"

Thanks for providing this regular information update from all departments for Colchester residents and others interested in Town affairs. Similar brief input from the Selectboard, perhaps from each member on a rotating basis, would also be beneficial.

The taxing dilemma will be sorted out, I'm certain. However, the Town budget VOTE may be affected because folks may not disassociate the two issues. Hopefully, Town officials will publicly set forth the options under consideration with some published evaluation of the pros and cons of each before the SB votes to pursue a course of action.

Thank you for your suggestions. I passed them on, and received this response from Sarah Hadd, Director of Planning and Zoning:

“Within the past year the Town has made additional efforts to schedule these inspections at the same time whenever feasible for the property owner, the inspector, and the assessor. The challenge can be that a property ready for occupancy from a safety point might not have all of the finishes completed that the assessor will need to see and therefore we can not always make this a standard one trip per property. Please be assured that this consolidation of efforts has been made and we will continue to look for these types of efficiencies moving forward.”
